Memorial Exhibition Dedicated to Laz Artist Hasan Helimishi

A memorial exhibition dedicated to Hasan Helimishi, a self-taught Laz artist and poet, has opened at the Ajara Museum of Art. The exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the artist’s passing and is organized by the Ajara Museum of Art at the initiative of Elisso Bolkvadze, Minister of Culture of the Autonomous Republic of Ajara.

The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the legislative and executive authorities of Ajara, the Director of the Ajara Museums Union, representatives of the Laz Ethnographic Museum of Sarpi, members of Hasan Helimishi’s family, artists and invited guests.

In her welcoming remarks, Minister of Culture Elisso Bolkvadze highlighted Hasan Helimishi’s distinctive artistic style and his important contribution to the development of Georgian visual art. The Minister noted that consultations are actively underway with international foundations in order to ensure a professional evaluation of the artist’s legacy and promote wider international recognition of his work.

Hasan Helimishi’s paintings are primarily dedicated to maritime themes, reflecting the traditions of the Black Sea coast, fishing and navigation culture. His artistic language is distinguished by a rich colour palette, expressive forms and refined aesthetics.

The artist’s works preserve unique elements of Laz folklore and ethnographic heritage, presenting the historical background, traditions and cultural identity of the Black Sea region.

The exhibition features works preserved at the Laz Ethnographic Museum of Sarpi and offers visitors an opportunity to explore the artistic legacy of Hasan Helimishi and the cultural heritage of the Laz community.

The exhibition represents an important step in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Ajara and strengthening international interest in the diverse artistic traditions of the Black Sea region.
