The restoration of Niko Pirosmani’s painting

The restoration of Niko Pirosmani’s painting "Woman Milking a Cow" has begun with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Autonomous Republic of Ajara.

On 6 August 2026, the Ajara Museum temporarily transferred the painting to the Restoration Laboratory of the National Museum of Georgia, in accordance with all procedures established by Georgian legislation. The transfer was carried out with the authorization of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation.

Highly qualified specialists will work on the restoration of the painting over a period of seven months. The conservation process will be carried out in two stages, following professional restoration standards and procedures.

Upon completion of the restoration, Woman Milking a Cow is expected to return to the Ajara Museum in 2027, where it will continue to be preserved as part of the museum’s collection.

Niko Pirosmani’s "Woman Milking a Cow" has been preserved at the Ajara Museum of Art since 1998. The restoration project represents an important step in ensuring the long-term preservation of the work and safeguarding Georgia’s valuable artistic and cultural heritage for future generations.
